Workshop Course
HAZWOPER Course
The HAZWOPER course meets OSHA certification requirements and the asbestos and lead inspector courses meet USEPA and State of Indiana requirements for certification/accreditation for licensure. HAZWOPER This course which is also called OSHA 40 hours is a one-week course taught during the first week after finals in the Fall semester, Dec. 16-20, 2002. The course fee is $100 plus 3 hours of tuition. Students may elect academic credit in NREM 350 or NREM 550 - Hazardous Materials Health and Safety at no additional charge. Lead Inspector Course
This 3-day course is offered during the second week of May (This year May 6-8, 2002). It has been approved by USEPA and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for lead inspector certification on successful completion. It is available as workshop only ($300) or academic credit (NREM 394/549 - Building Asbestos and Lead Management) when combined with the asbestos inspector course. More Information.

Asbestos Inspector Course
The Asbestos Inspector Course, a 3-day course, is offered in the latter part of the second week in May following the lead inspector course (this year May 9-11, 2002). It has both USEPA and IDEM certification approval. It is available as workshop only ($300) or academic credit (NREM 349/549 - Building Asbestos and Lead Management) when combined with the lead inspector workshop. Combined course fee is $100 plus 3 hours tuition. More Information.

Wetlands Characterization
The Wetlands Characterization 5-day workshop course is based on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual (1987). We cover wetland functions and values and you learn how to delineate wetland boundaries. Subjects covered include wetland hydrology, hydric soils, hydrophytic vegetation. It is available as a workshop only or for academic credit (NREM 320 for undergraduates and NREM 520 for graduate students). It is taught the first week of first summer session (May 12-16, 2003). The workshop course fee is $100 plus 3 hours tuition. Non-credit students can enroll for a fee of $500 total.

The course instructor is Hugh Brown, Ph.D. The prerequisite is NREM 221 (Soil Resources) or permission of the department chairperson. Please contact Dr. Brown for information about this course.


The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management offers a number of professional workshop courses which are designed to provide specialized training in handling hazardous materials on waste sites and in emergency responses, conducting asbestos building inspections, conducting lead inspections and characterizing wetlands.

These courses are offered annually for students in the university as well as environmental professionals in the region. They are available for academic credit or may be taken as workshop only.They include:
