The Department
conducts research that explores topics in environmental management
that range from investigations of natural communities to highly
disturbed sites that require remediation. Titles of graduate theses
completed within the last five years are listed.
All faculty
are Group I members of the Graduate Faculty which means they supervise
graduate student committees. Thad
Godish, our air quality expert, was recognized as the
Ball State University Outstanding Researcher in August, 2000.
John Pichtel and Paul
Chandler have been selected as Fulbright scholars and
other faculty have served in a variety of professional organizations
as editors and officers.
Our facilities
include analytical equipment
such as a mass
sprectrometer, liquid and gas chromatography,
atomic absorption spectrophotometer,
total carbon analyzer, time domain reflectrometry, soil water desorption
device,
tension infiltrometers, O2, CO, and CO2 analyzers, particle size
analyzer, air flow calibrator, dataloggers, an automated weather
station, and many other instruments. The Department manages a 100
acre property (Hults Environmental Learning
Center) that include agricultural and natural areas such as
forests, wetlands, prairie, and riparian habitats. We also have
access to a number of additional sites that contain diverse ecosystems.
We frequently have external funding for research assistantships
that provide support for students working on thesis projects.
