The
Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management prepares
students for careers in environmental science
and management of natural resources. The
programs offered by the department are designed to give students
a basic scientific and socioeconomic understanding of ecosystems.
The department
offers a major in natural resources and environmental management,
a minor in natural resources, a minor in environmental management,
a teaching minor in conservation and environmental studies, and
an endorsement for elementary education majors. The
department also coordinates interdepartmental minors in energy and
environmental policy.
Students majoring
in natural resources and environmental management choose one of
the following options: natural resource studies, environmental interpretation
and outdoor recreation management, environmental protection, land
management, and occupational and industrial hygiene. All majors
must complete a common core requirement.
Many courses
include laboratory work using sophisticated analytical equipment.
Each year, students have opportunities for in-depth two-to-four-week
field studies in the United States and other countries. Students
are encouraged to participate in practicums or internships under
the supervision of faculty members or professionals working in private
consulting firms, governmental agencies, or environmental education
centers.
