Teaching Major Decision Point 2 Requirements

1. Hours & GPA Requirements

Complete 45 hours and earn at least a 2.5 overall G.P.A.

2. Courses & Artifacts: English and Communications

You must earn a C or better in required ENG and COMM courses and artifacts.

Decision Point 2 courses and artifacts include the following:

• ENG 220 (Language and Society Assessment)
• ENG 230 (Research Paper)
• COMM 210
• COMM 220 (Debate Assignment)
• COMM 240 (Paper or Exam) or COMM 290 (Paper)

These two classes below are for the 2002-2008 catalog programs only.  Not required for the 2008-2010 catalog programs.

• ENG 210 (Rhetorical Analysis)
• ENG 213 (Web Site Project)

For each of the above courses, your instructor will fill out a rubric (i.e. scoring sheet) for the required artifact and enter it into rGrade. You may view the rubrics used to assess your artifact by going to the Language Arts program page in rGrade. Scroll down to a particular artifact and click on the red cube associated with it to view the appropriate rubric.

You must pass each artifact with a C or better. If you do not, then we have established a process where you can attempt to “remediate” the artifact. In this case, please contact Dr. Adam Beach, the Director of Undergraduate Programs (285-8574) to begin the remediation process. The student must successfully revise the artifact within the semester following the course in which he/she failed the artifact. If the student fails to revise the artifact up to acceptable standards, he/she will have the choice of retaking the class or dropping the teaching major. The revision of the artifact will not change the student’s course grade.

3. Artifacts: Professional Education Courses

You must earn a C or better in your 100 and 200-level Professional Education Courses.

Decision Point 2 artifacts from these courses include the following:

• EDMUL 205 (Autobiography)
• EDPSY 251 (Developmental Paper)

Your instructor for each course will fill out a rubric for the required artifact and enter it into rGrade. You may view the rubrics used to assess your artifact by clicking on the “red cube” icon in rGrade.

4. Disposition Assessment

Disposition Assessment takes place in EDMUL 205. For information on Dispositions Assessments see the following information from Teacher’s College: Dispositions article. This page also includes a link to the rubric used to assess your dispositions.

5. PRAXIS I Exam

Information on Praxis testing can be found on the ETS website. You may also consult this information from Teacher’s College: Testing Requirements. 

6. Decision Point 2 Portfolio

At Decision Point 2, your portfolio needs to include a revised set of reflective statements for each INTASC principle. These should be clearly labeled Decision Point 2 reflections, and they should appear immediately above those you wrote for Decision Point 1 so that reviewers can chart the development of your thinking about each INTASC principle.

You also need to include one artifact with an accompanying rationale clearly labeled DP2 for INTASC Principles #1-3. These artifacts come from specific classes; therefore, it is necessary to have taken these classes before you turn in your portfolio.

• For INTASC Principle #1, you should choose one English content artifact that has been assessed at Decision Point #2 (from ENG 220, or 230.)
• Your artifact from INTASC Principle #2 should come from EDPSYCH 250/1.
• Your artifact for INTASC Principle #3 should come from EdMul 205

Portfolio Evaluation

Beginning in Spring 2008, portfolios will be evaluated at Decision Point 2 in the English Department as follows:

• A committee of three professional education faculty from the English Department, as appointed by the department chair, will conduct the review.
• Portfolios will be due on the Friday of the seventh week of the semester from all students who are finishing their DP 2 classes in that semester. The undergraduate studies director will send several emails to all English majors early in the semester, and as the deadline approaches, informing them that anyone who is enrolled in their final DP 2 classes (ENG 220, 230, EDMUL 205, EDPSY 251, COMM 220 and 240 or 290) must submit their electronic portfolio by that deadline.
• Each student must submit his/her portfolio by emailing the portfolio’s web address to the undergraduate studies director. The undergraduate studies director will forward the web addresses to the committee.
• Portfolios will be assessed on rGrade by Friday of Week 9 of the semester. The undergraduate studies director will inform any student who has not gotten an overall rating of “Basic” or better. If a student earns an unsatisfactory rating, the student will be required to re-submit the portfolio by Friday of week 12 of the semester. The committee will re-evaluate any failed portfolios by Friday of week 14 of the semester.

7. Approved Application
