Maintaining Your Computer
Microsoft Windows Defender

Man Using Looking Glass into PC for Spyware article

Microsoft has upgraded it's free anti-spyware software to Windows Defender (Beta 2).   It helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, and a new streamlined interface that minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive.

The upgrade has numerous improvements: a new scanning engine for better performance; user interfaces and alerts are simplified; improved control over programs on your computer using enhanced Software Explorer, protection technologies for all users, whether or not they have administrator rights on the computer; automatic cleaning according to your settings during regularly scheduled scans; and support for multiple languages, for individuals who need assistive technology.  In addition there is now support for Microsoft Windows XP Professional X64 Edition.

Windows Defender's updates work in conjunction with other Windows updates.  You can choose to have automatic updates provided by Microsoft analysts to help detect and remove new threats as the threats are identified.
