Dealing with Spam
What About Indiana's New Anti-Spam Law? How Can I Use It To Block Spam?
The Indiana anti-spam law became effective on July 1, 2003 adding Indiana to the majority of other states that have already enacted anti-spam legislation of some kind. Absent some exceptions for a prior existing relationship between the parties, Indiana's law requires that senders of unsolicited commercial e-mail include "ADV:" as the first four characters in the subject line of the electronic mail message, and include "ADV:ADLT" as the first eight characters in the subject line of the message, if the message relates to extensions of credit or is otherwise related to products or services that are off-limits to minors under existing laws.

It is not currently known how effective this law will have on reducing the amount of spam that Indiana residents receive, however the issue appears somewhat controversial, with some industry analysis fearing that the cost of tracking down spammers would prohibit the new law from having any real impact.

You can create a rule in Outlook that searches for the "ADV:" and the "ADV:ADLT" character patters in the subject of your e-mail messages, and then either delete or move these messages to a folder where you can later review or delete them.  You may contact the University Computing Services Helpdesk for more information about creating Outlook rules.
