Ball State University, with an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, was originally founded as a private normal school in 1899. The Ball brothers, Muncie Industrialists (Ball Jars), purchased the buildings and land and donated them to the state of Indiana in 1911. The state later renamed the school Ball State University in their honor. Ranked as a research intensive institution by the Carnegie Foundation, BSU has nationally recognized programs in Architecture, Communication, Education, Business, and Music.

The School of Music is a comprehensive music school with approximately 650 students. The fall of 2004 marks the opening of the new Music Instruction Building, with an expanded home for the Music Technology program, and the 550-seat Sursa Recital hall.

The Music Technology program is a comprehensive audio program for undergraduates, with approximately 95 majors. The program features study in computer music, recording, and composition. In the fall of 2004 the progam moved into its new home in the Music Instruction Building, with 14 studios encompassing almost 10,000 square feet of space.
