Science Doctoral Program
Program Requirements
 

  • Completion deadline
    • You must complete the program within seven years of when you began it.
  • Program approval
    • Full-time students must receive advisor approval by the end of the first year of study
    • Part-time students must receive advisor approval by the end of the second year of study
  • Coursework, minimum of 90 hours, distributed as follows:
    • Forty-eight of the required 90 hours must be completed at Ball State
    • Science education and education coursework
      • Not to overlap with any other requirements
      • Includes:
        • EDHI 609 Teaching at the College Level
        • EDHI 610 Issues in Higher Education
        • EDPSY 646 Tests and Measurement
        • SCI 696 Current Issues in Science Education
        • One course in learning or development
    • Major in one of the science fields listed below, 25 credit hours
      • Biology
      • Chemistry
      • Computer Science
      • Geology
      • Mathematical Science
      • Natural Resources and Environmental Management
      • Physics and Astronomy
      • Physiology and Health Science 
    • Cognate in another science field or related area, 15 credit hours
      • Courses in education and sceince education, not included in the major, 20 hours
  • Research colloquium (ID705), 2 credit hours 
    •  Two semesters in the research colloquium
    •  At least one session presentation
  • Dissertation, 10 credit hours
    • In science education at the elementary, middle, secondary, or college level
  • Teaching Internship, (SCI 790) 3 credit hours
    • A supervised, extended internship to give you experience in methods classes and in lower-division science classes in conventional and technology-oriented systems instruction
  • Residency
    • One of two residency options must be completed.
      • Option A: Two consecutive semesters, which may include one summer, during which at least 15 hours of graduate coursework must be completed.  
      •  Option B: At least 24 hours in four consecutive semesters, including summer(s), with at least six hours taken each semester
