Science Doctoral Program
Program Requirements
 
    • Completion deadline
      • You must complete the program within seven years of when you began it.
    • Program approval
      • Full-time students must receive advisor approval by the end of the first year of study
      • Part-time students must receive advisor approval by the end of the second year of study
    • Coursework, minimum of 90 hours, distributed as follows:
      • Forty-eight of the required 90 hours must be completed at Ball State
      • Major in one of the science fields listed below, 36 credit hours
        • Biology 
        • Chemistry
        • Computer science
        • Geology
        • Mathematical science
        • Natural resources and environmental management
        • Physics and astronomy
        • Physiology and health science
      • Cognate in another science field or related area, 24 credit hours
        • Option A: One science cognate of at least 24 hours in a science other than your or related area.
        • Option B*: One science cognate of at least 15 hours in a science other than your major, or related area, plus at least nine hours in education beyond the 12 hours *Note: We encourage Option B.
      • Coursework in teaching (not overlapping with an education cognate), 12 credit hours
        • EDHI 609 Teaching at the College Level
        • EDHI 610 Issues in Higher Education
        • EDPSY 646 Tests and Measurements
        • One course in learning or development
  • Current Issues in Science Education (SCI 696), 3 credit hours
  • Research colloquium (ID705), 2 credit hours
    • Two semesters in the research colloquium
    • At least one session presentation
  • Dissertation, (Diss 799) 10 credit hours
    In either your science major or in teaching your science major
  • Teaching Internship, (SCI 790)3 credit hours

    • A supervised, extended internship to give you experience in conventional and technology-oriented systems instruction
  • Residency
  • One of two residency options must be completed.
    • Option A: Two consecutive semesters, which may include one summer, during which at least 15 hours of graduate coursework must be completed.
    • Option B: At least 24 hours in four consecutive semesters, including summer(s), with at least six hours taken each semester
