What to expect when you visit the Ombudsperson
1. You explain and describe your issue or concern
When you visit the Ombudsperson, you will be asked to describe your issue or concern. The Ombudsperson will listen carefully and ask questions. The Ombudsperson makes it a priority to be sensitive to your feelings and how you feel you have been treated. Together, you and the Ombudsperson will define the issues at hand.
The Ombudsperson will ask questions to clarify:
- what has happened
- who is involved
- how you feel about the situation
- actions you've already taken to resolve the matter
2. You are assisted in your decision-making
Next, you and the Ombudsperson will discuss what you would like to have happen, what you believe is fair, and what options you have to address the issue.
In all of this discussion, it is important to note that the Ombudsperson will remain neutral, impartial, objective, and fair-minded. The Ombudsperson does not become an advocate for one side or another in a dispute.
3. Together, we identify options and others who can help
As the conversation continues, the Ombudsperson may be able to identify policies, procedures and options that would apply in your situation. The Ombudsperson might refer you to other individuals on campus who could assist in the situation.
4. You decide what will happen next
Before you leave, you and the Ombudsperson will discuss and evaluate your options. You will be able to clarify the next steps you plan to take to resolve the problem. The Ombudsperson will be interested to be sure you understand the process or procedure that will be followed in your situation. The Ombudsperson will not discuss your situation with any other people without your permission.
