Guidance for Faculty
The Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for administering the formal grade appeal process as outlined in The Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities. However, before an appeal can be heard formally, the student must first initiate an informal process with the course instructor and the department chairperson.

Please use this information as an abbreviated guide should a student request an appeal of a grade.  Please Refer to our website at www.bsu.edu/sa/dean/stucode for a complete listing of the grade appeal process and The Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Faculty Level

A student is given ten school days after the start of an academic semester to request a review of a grade from the previous semester.  We recommend that a meeting take place in person.  The instructor must meet with the student within ten days of their request.  The instructor should listen carefully to the student’s concerns and questions.  If it is determined an error was made in the recording of the grade, the instructor should file a grade change form.  If the instructor believes that the grade was recorded correctly and the student is not satisfied, the instructor should refer the student to the department chairperson.

Chairperson Level

A student is given ten (10) school days after the course instructor denies the grade appeal to initiate a meeting with the department chairperson.  The chairperson should also meet in person with the student to discuss the appeal.  The chairperson should then contact the instructor to discuss the rationale for the instructor’s denial of the grade appeal.  If the dispute cannot be resolved to the student’s satisfaction, the student should be informed of the option to proceed with the formal grade appeal process.  Please advise the student to meet with the Dean of Students to initiate the formal grade appeal process within ten (10) days of the department chairperson’s decision.
