Dear BSU Army ROTC Alumni:
We are trying to initiate the
BSU Army ROTC Alumni Program. Since commissioning, many of you
have been involved in some pretty amazing activities. I would
like to organize a way for the Alumni to bring everyone up to
date on their life experiences and provide a venue for all of
you
to connect with your classmates.
If you are interested in contributing
information to the BSU ROTC Alumni Program, please send me the
following information and you may also send photographs which I
will post on our Website:

Any interesting snippets that you would
like to share about your career
If you know the contact information of
other BSU alumni, please pass that along as well.
Please contact me if I can do anything for
you.

and though I'd send you some pictures. I commissioned in 2006
and am currently deployed to Al Asad in Anbar, Iraq with the
76th IBCT. Our mission here is convoy security. I've attached a

LTC
Girdley,
I am a BSU
ROTC alum and decided to check out the website again after a
couple of years. I thought I’d answer your call for
information on alumni and I’ve added two current photos of
myself. They were both taken here in Afghanistan where I’m
deployed with
the 101st
Airborne Division (Air Assault). The first photo is of me
singing during a revival and the second is when I received
my combat patch.

Information about my career: Definitely not on the beaten
path that many officers take.
I was branch detailed in the Chemical Corps for two years
before transitioning to the Ordnance Corps.
After
graduating Chemical OBC in 1991 at Fort McClellan, Alabama,
I was stationed in Germany where I got caught in the
drawdown. I was the Division Chemical Officer in the 2d
Armored Division (-), Garlstedt (we deactivated) and in the
5-7 ADA BN at Bitburg AB. When I transitioned to the
Ordnance Corps, I moved to Miesau where I was the shop
officer for the 6th Combat Equipment Company.
This was in the days just after REFORGER where the CECs
housed Battalion and Brigade sets of equipment and
maintained them…precursor to the Army Prepositioned Stocks (APS)
of today. I attended the Combined Logistics Officer
Advanced Course at Fort Lee, VA in 1995/96, after which I
was
assigned to Fort Hood, TX. I began as
the
Current Operations Officer in the G3 of 13th
Corps Support Command
(COSCOM)
and later
took command of the 597th Maintenance Company,
within the 544th
Maintenance Battalion, still in 13th COSCOM.
After command, I attended the Combined Arms Staff and
Services School (CAS3) at Fort Leavenworth, KS, and then was
assigned
to Eighth US Army (EUSA) in Korea from 1999 to 2000.
After
Korea, I was assigned to the 1-1 IN BN at West Point, NY as
the
Battalion S4. After promotion to MAJ in 2002, I headed to
Puerto Rico with United States Army-South (USARSO) as the
Materiel Management Center Chief (and later, as we relocated
the unit to Fort Sam Houston, I was also the Supply &
Services Chief). In 2003, I was offered a MAJ-level command
as
the Patriot Training Detachment Commander at Fort Bliss,
TX. After two WONDERFUL years in command as a MAJ, I
relocated to Fort McPherson, GA where I was
a plans
and operations officer in
the ARCENT
G4
Exercise Branch. I was the lead logistics planner for
the 07/08
BRIGHT STAR in Egypt and spent about 90 days in Egypt over
the course of two years. In 2008, I
joined the
101st as the Supply & Services Chief two months
before deploying to Afghanistan. I was frocked in March and
promoted in May of 2008.
Odd
tidbits about my career:
-
I was
selected
for the All Army Track and Field Team in 1994 and 1995 where
I placed 2d and 3d in the high jump at the Armed Forces
Meet. That was a blast and I was fortunate to have
Commanders who supported this opportunity.
-
I sang the
US national anthem at a
“home”
Montreal Expos game in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2003. This
was when the Expos were trying to save their club and spent
half their home games in Puerto Rico and half in Montreal.
They wanted a US Soldier to sing the national anthem and our
garrison selected me.
-
I would
not be where I am today if not for the Cardinal Battalion.
I do not come from a military family and only took the
initial classes my freshman year as an elective. As I
always say, I
got too
interested in every aspect of ROTC and the Army and was
hooked for life. The Cadre and MSIVs did an outstanding job
and I always wanted to give back to ROTC in some way.
I’m
married to Jeff, a retired CW4 Blackhawk helicopter
pilot/Safety Officer. He is currently located south of
Atlanta until
I redeploy
and then he’ll move up to Fort Campbell. He works for the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an
Emergency Preparedness
and
Response Team/Occupational Health and Safety Specialist.

Aloha Sir,
I was commissioned through Ball State ROTC in 1998.
Currently, I am finishing up grad school courtesy of the
Army's ACS program. Prior to that, I was an Armor and
Cavalry officer with assignments as a tank platoon leader
and tank company XO in 2-8 Cav and Ft Hood, a ground cavalry
troop XO in 4-7 Cav in Korea, and a ground cavalry troop
commander in 1-1 Cav in Germany. My staff positions include
assistant operations officer at the cavalry squadron level
in 4-7 Cav in Korea, 3-16 Cav in Kentucky, and at the
division level in 1st Armored Division in Baghdad from
2003-2004. I was also a squadrom maintenance officer in 1-1
Cav in Germany for a time.
Now, I've been assessed into FA34 (Strategic
Intelligence) and will attend the required training upon
completion of my Masters in Diplomacy and Military Studies
at Hawaii Pacific University.
I do have some additional information for you. On your
list of previous PMS's, LTC Foley's tenure ended in 1996.
After him was LTC Jerry Gill, who I know was there until
1998 when I left, so he also probably was there until 1999
until LTC Warrick took over. Additionally, I am in regular
contact with other BSU ROTC Alumns CPT (P) Nick Sporinsky
(gets promoted to Major in a few days), CPT Jeff Lowe (curently
the J2 of INARNG's JFHQ at Stout Field, MAJ Ben Rex
(currently BDE ADJ of 3rd BDE, 82 ABN DIV), and in recent
years was in Germany with CPT Steve Crowe and in Germany and
Iraq with MAJ Ben Wilkins.
The website looks great!
