The Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Programs announces a revised Internal Grants program, now called the ASPiRE Program. OARSP Faculty Fellow, Dr. Jennifer Bott, has coordinated efforts to revise and refine the program. See Dr.Bott's article on the ASPiRE Program featured last month in the Staff Notes.
The new ASPiRE program will include three faculty programs:
Start-Up competition--DeadlineOctober 1, 2008
for new faculty (defined as tenure-track faculty in their first year of employment at Ball State) who do not receive significant research funds from their department. . Award recipients will receive $1,500 for supplies, expenses, equipment and travel (SEET).
Junior Faculty Competition--Research Deadline: January 16, 2009; Creative Arts Deadline: January 23, 2009
(formerly New Faculty Competition) for tenure-track faculty in their first, second or third year. Faculty may compete for summer stipends (up to $6,000), supplemental assigned time, summer graduate assistantships, and SEET funds. Proposals are capped at $10,000.
General Faculty Competition--Research Deadline: November 3, 2008; Creative Arts Deadline: November 7, 2008
summer stipends offered for a maximum of $6,000 and a total proposal cap of $10,000. Programs for Reprint/Publication Support and Travel Support for External Funding remain largely the same.
Program changes will include the following considerations:

Program changes will include the following considerations:
- Emphasize new and junior faculty research in order to help these individuals begin a solid research program upon entry to the University
- Institute a cap on proposals to better follow budget restrictions
- Offer a summer stipend, rather than a summer salary, in order to allow faculty to continue to teach in the summer and make the payment consistent across departments/colleges
- Shorten the length of proposals, making the process more efficient for researchers and reviewers
- Emphasize the importance of ASPiRE proposals serving as vehicles for garnering external funding
Student programs have also changed, limiting competitions for graduate students from three competitions to one (with an invitation to resubmit) and undergraduates to two (from five).
Graduate Student Program Deadlines:
- Research proposals due: October 27, 2008
- Creative Arts proposals due: October 31, 2008
- Hollis Program due: October 2, 2008; April 1, 2009
- Travel Support for Professional Meetings due: 15th of every month
Undergraduate Student Program Deadlines:
- Research proposals due: November 14, 2008; January 19, 2009
- Creative Arts proposals due: November 17, 2008; January 16, 2009
- Travel Support for Professional Meetings due: 15th of every month
New guidelines, forms, and submission processes will be published at www.bsu.edu/research. Questions regarding the program can be routed to aspire@bsu.edu.
