Campus Safety and Alcohol Awareness
Alcohol Use: Possible Consequences of Illegal Use
The legal drinking age in Indiana is 21 years old. If you are caught breaking alcohol laws, you will face several consequences.

  • You can be ticketed and fined. Fines for alcohol violations can be as much as $500.
  • If you are cited by university or Muncie police, whether on or off campus, you will face disciplinary consequences from the university.
  • An alcohol conviction can jeopardize your admission to graduate or law school or even prevent you from entering professions that require licenses, like teaching or nursing.

Typical University Discipline for Alcohol Violations
The university looks at each violation of the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities on a case-by-case basis, and consequences are based on the nature of the violation and the circumstances. If a first violation puts the student or others at risk, the consequences may be more severe. Generally, however, the following actions are taken in response to an alcohol violation.

1st Offense

  • 16 weeks of disciplinary probation
  • Letter stating that if you commit any violation of the student code, you can be referred to the review board for suspension or expulsion.
  • Mandatory attendance in an alcohol-awareness program you pay for.

2nd Offense

  • Parental notification
  • One year disciplinary probation
  • Mandatory attendance in an alcohol-awareness program you pay for.

3rd Offense

  • University Review Board will consider suspension or expulsion

Typical Consequences for Alcohol Violations in Residence Halls
As with university discipline, consequences are based on the severity of the violation. A first offense with extreme circumstances, like being very intoxicated, being belligerent to staff, or being hospitalized, could result in more severe consequences.

1st Offense

  • Mandatory attendance in an alcohol-awareness program you pay for
  • Follow-up discussion with a facilitator and others who went through the program

2nd Offense

  • 16 weeks of disciplinary probation
  • Parental notification
  • Mandatory attendance in an alcohol counseling program

3rd Offense

  • Extended probation
  • Could be moved to another hall
  • Housing contract could be cancelled
