Alcohol Use: Effects of Excessive Drinking
High-risk drinking -- drinking alcohol to excess -- can have significant negative effects. You could injure yourself or others or get into trouble with the police.

High-risk drinking can also result in unplanned sexual activity, including unprotected sex. It can create academic problems, including missing class and performing poorly on tests or assignments, which could cause your grades to slip. It can also cause you to miss work repeatedly, resulting in losing your job. High-risk drinking could also have a negative effect on personal relationships with family and friends.

If you choose to drink:

  • Know that you are breaking the law if you are under 21 and could be arrested or fined, plus face university discipline.
  • Avoid drinking games. Do not do beer bongs or funnel drinks. Don't do shots or chug beers.
  • Drink slowly. Do not drink a lot in a short period of time.
  • Eat a full meal before drinking. Do not drink on an empty stomach.
  • Do not mix alcohol with other drugs, either medications or illegal drugs.
  • Know your limit and stick to it.
  • Alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Always know what you are drinking and where it came from.
  • Drink no more than one alcoholic beverage per hour.
  • Keep your drink with you and be aware of date rape drugs.

Building up a tolerance to alcohol, reaching a very high blood alcohol content, not remembering how you got home or where you were the night before, and getting into altercations as a result of impaired judgment are dangerous results of alcohol use. You could be putting yourself in serious danger and jeopardizing your future. Know the facts, and make wise choices about alcohol.
