Ball State University's Master of Science in Historic Preservation (MSHP) program is designed for and open to people from diverse undergraduate programs. A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university is required. Admission is determined on the basis of the applicant's qualifications. Normally, admission to this program requires an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

Application Procedures
Prospective students must apply to and meet the admission requirements of both the Graduate School and the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation. Applicants must be accepted by the Graduate School before the director of the preservation program can review the application. To expedite the process, please submit your application materials to the program director at the same time you apply to the Graduate School.

- One official transcript from each higher education institution you have attended
- Letters of recommendation from three academic and/or professional references or employers
- Personal statement on why you want to enroll in the program, including a brief description of your background, your rationale for pursuing graduate studies, and your educational and professional objectives (300 to 500 words)
- Sample of your scholarly research and writing (10 to 15 pages)
NOTE: International students must follow different application procedures.
Application Deadlines
The deadline for applications is February 15 before the academic year in which you wish to enroll. Candidates applying by February 15 will be notified by March 15. Applications received after February 15 will be considered if space remains available.
Transfer Credit
Academic credits may be transferred, within limits, for graduate-level courses taken at accredited institutions. Also, electives may be substituted for required courses in light of prior academic work or practical experience. Each request for transfer credit or course substitutions is considered individually on its own merits.
Assistantships
A limited number of graduate assistantships are available to qualified master's degree candidates. Graduate assistants receive a stipend and pay substantially reduced fees. Applications for assistantships must be submitted to the director of the program by February 15. Outside assistantships with the Center for Historic Preservation or with nearby preservation organizations are available for qualified second-year students.
