Disaster Planning
Business Fellows
Video Feature
In this immersive learning project, a team of Ball State students worked directly with Delaware County Emergency Management staff to produce computer models of how natural disasters like floods and tornados could impact Muncie and Delaware County.  By forecasting what could happen, the county is now more informed to plan for disasters.

Shaun Wilson and his professor, Fred Kitchens, talk about this unique learning experience:

Who Produced This Video?
Ball State students, of course. Learn more.

This month's featured immersive learning project is part of Ball State's Business Fellows program. These projects involve a faculty mentor and a student team who work directly with Indiana businesses and organizations on real-life projects.

In this case, the Delaware County Emergency Management office did not have the computing power to produce disaster scenarios using software they get from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The student's solution to use a cluster computing system significantly decreased the time to produce these disaster models - meaning the county could quickly get to the important task of disaster planning.
