Associate Degree in Legal Assistance
A legal assistant or paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.

The Associate of Arts - Legal Assistance at Ball State is a paralegal/legal assistant education program approved by the American Bar Association.  It is a high quality academic degree program that provides students a strong curriculum and solid foundation for entry into the very competitive paralegal field.  Program graduates are encouraged to continue on for their bachelor's degree.  The program is also attractive to returning graduates with a bachelor's degree who desire to attain paralegal knowledge and expertise in an ABA-approved program.  Paralegals, as members of the legal services team, work under the supervision of a lawyer.  A paralegal may not provide legal services directly to the public, except as permitted by law.

Transfer students, in addition to other University requirements, must complete at least four of their legal specialty classes of three credits each at Ball State as approved by the Program Director.
