Ball State University has added to its Police fleet, three 2009 Dodge Chargers and mandatory training are required by the department in Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVO) prior to operating. The reasons for the training are, the vehicles’ body style is notably different from the Ford Crown Victoria police officers are use to driving. Training objectives that will be emphasized are blind spots and vehicle operations. The Dodge Charger has several blind spot that officer have to be aware of and overcome to maintain the safety of the vehicle and public. They are located at the right and left windshield post. The spotlights are attached through the post and the posts are wider than the Crown Victoria, causing the view to be obstructed. The left and right rear side panel obstructs and depletes the view of the driver. The back deck lid inside of the vehicle is too high obstructing officer’s view when backing. These are just a few of the obstacles noted that prompted training. All Officers must complete the training prior to the operating of the vehicle. It is the goal of the University Police Department to provide the best in safety and security to our officers and to the community that we serve.
