MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University officials have formally recognized the
work of a police officer in saving a young woman’s life.
Cpl. Terrell Smith was honored recently with a certificate of commendation
for a lifesaving rescue. The 10-year veteran saved a former Ball State student
May 2 from a burning off-campus apartment building.
The certificate was signed by Ball State President Blaine A. Brownell and Police Chief Joseph G. Wehner. It was presented during a department staff meeting by Don Mikesell, dean of students.
Smith risked his life in an act that went beyond the normal requirements of the job, demonstrating exceptional courage, judgment and initiative, said Robert Fey, assistant police chief.
“The men and women of the police department are very proud of Corporal Smith for his heroic efforts,” Fey said. “Anyone familiar with Terrell knows that's just the kind of guy he is."
