On April 23, 2009, the Ball State University Department of Public Safety (University Police) received full accreditation from the Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission. The BSU Police Department is the first campus law enforcement agency in the state of Indiana to be accredited, and one of only ten departments in the state to receive this honor. The accreditation program is a joint effort of ILEAC (Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission) and CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.) The Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission was formed in 2005 to establish a body of standards designed to: 1.Increase law enforcement agency capabilities to prevent and control crime; 2.Increase agency effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of law enforcement services; 3.Increase cooperation and coordination with other law enforcement agencies and the criminal justice system; and 4.Increase citizen and employee confidence in the goals, objectives, policies, and practices of the agency. The assessment team found the Ball State University Department of Public Safety to be “a professional organization, dedicated to delivering quality service to its jurisdiction”. The agency’s files were “well-maintained, well-organized, and compiled in a manner that made the assessors’ review easy and efficient”. The accreditation report noted “… it was obvious the accreditation manager took great pride in the preparation and maintenance of the files”.The accreditation Manager for this project was Officer Renita de la Garza. Please join us in congratulating Renita for a job well done.
