As a supplement to car patrols, university police use bicycle patrols 24 hours a day, allowing officers quick and easy access to campus locations that are difficult to reach via car.
The bikes also allow officers more direct contact with students and staff, because the officers can be stopped for assistance easier than if they were in a traditional vehicle.
Each bike officer has completed a specialized bike officer training course sponsored by The Ohio State University and the University of Notre Dame police departments.
"The bike patrol is a very cost-effective and environmentally sound approach to patrolling the campus and surrounding neighborhoods," says Assistant Police Chief Robert Fey. "Our officers are very personable individuals who understand the positive impact a bike patrol has on public relations, crime prevention and community policing."
