Summer Workshop in Planetarium Operations
Classic Planetariums in a Digital Age: How to Flourish
Ball State University
July 7 – 11, 2008

Today, the planetarium field appears to be dominated by the influence of full-dome video projection systems. The dwindling number of commercial program packages for traditional planetariums reinforces this impression. Yet, the vast majority of planetariums use optical-mechanical projectors and with limited funding this situation will continue for many years. Other pressures on the classic planetarium facility include the disappearance of film-photography, slide projectors and analog audio. This workshop will concentrate on affordable solutions in this age of rapidly changing technology. A hands-on approach will allow participants the opportunity to creatively explore the potential of digital audio and multi-screen video production.

This workshop is for persons who want to explore creative avenues for the current facility and for those new to the planetarium field as well. This workshop can be taken for either graduate or undergraduate credit (3-credit hours).
