Summer Internship - West Nile Virus Field Technician (4/22/2008)
Special consideration may be given to a student who, during the summer, will live in northwestern Indiana or another area of the State where WNV surveillance is needed.

Job Duties

The paid intern will assist with the Indiana State Department of Health's West Nile Virus Surveillance program. The student will be assigned to specific duties as follows:

  • The student will collect mosquitoes for virus identification using CDC miniature light traps and gravid traps especially designed for mosquito collection.  Locations for these collections will be determined in consultation with the project director and/or the State's Senior Medical Entomologist.  The student will receive training in mosquito identification and other tasks needed for their work. 
  • The student may also be trained to collect wild birds for testing.  He or she will be taught how to draw blood samples from these birds, band them and release them.   The blood samples will be transported to Indiana State Department of Health laboratories in Indianapolis for testing.

This position will be available May 1 - September 30, 2008.  If the applicant is a Ball State student, he or she must enroll for internship credit.  Also, all applicants must be enrolled on a full-time basis in a college or university for the Fall Term of the 2008 academic year. The student must agree to work for at least a 10-week period of the project, May 19, 2008 to July 25, 2008.  Each applicant must have a valid Indiana Driver's License, access to a vehicle, and be willing to drive the vehicle on State business.  Travel expenses will be reimbursed.  The pay is about $10 per hour @ 37.5 hours per week.
