
Connie M. Weaver, Ph.D., was selected by the Ball State University Department of Physiology and Health Science to receive the 2006 McGovern Award. Her February lecture, entitled "Calcium and Bone Health in Adolescents," was attended by more than 150 students, faculty, and community members.
Dr. Weaver is Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Foods & Nutrition at Purdue University. In 2000, she also became Director of a National Institutes of Health-funded Botanical Center to study dietary supplements containing polyphenolics for age-related diseases. She has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board Panel charged with developing new recommendations for requirements for calcium and related minerals.
Dr. Weaver's name will be added to the list of distinguished McGovern Award recipients which includes former Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, Dr. Henry Heimlich, Robert Bazell of NBC News, and Dr. J. Michael McGinnis.
