AWARD: The award consists of a one‑year credit of $1000 that is applied to the student's tuition and fees. Recipients are eligible to reapply annually subject to the procedures below.
CRITERIA: Full-time undergraduate students presently enrolled at Ball State, those who will transfer to Ball State, and previous recipients of the Miller Scholarship Award are eligible to apply provided that they have:
(1) a GPA of 3.0 (B average) or higher
(2) declared physics as a major or minorHigh school students are eligible to apply provided that they declare physics as a major or minor at Ball State. Candidates should satisfy at least one of the following criteria:
(1) have an academic index of 3.0 or higher;
(2) have a combined Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) verbal, math, and written score of 1500 or above;
(Incoming freshmen candidates are also encouraged to apply as well for another scholarship fund, the Freshman Physics Scholarship Award.)Financial need is a consideration in determining the scholarship recipient.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: All applications must be completed and returned on or before 5:00PM, March 1, 2009.
All applicants...
(1) must be currently enrolled at or verify that they have made application to Ball State University for admission;
(2) will submit a completed Department of Physics and Astronomy Scholarship Application Form with a double‑spaced, typewritten autobiography, two or three pages in length, with some particular attention to goals and aspirations in physics or physics teaching and to financial need;
(3) must submit a transcript of high school and/or college grade record;
(4) should ask at least two school officials (teachers or administrators) to submit confidential letters of recommendation.
SELECTION: Final selection will be made on the basis of financial need, academic ability, character, creativity, and potential for academic excellence. The selection committee consists of three faculty members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the department head, and a representative of the Student Financial Aid Office.
