Ball State University Education Bachelor of Arts: Accounting State University of New York - Binghamton Master of Arts: Physical Education Southern Methodist University Ph.D.: Exercise Physiology Southern Illinois University Research Interests Clinical Aspects of Exercise Physiology - Research conducted by the Clinical Exercise Physiology (CEP) Program focuses on clinical applications of exercise. The program studies a wide variety of clinically related topics, however, three principles areas of research are: 1) validity and reliability of clinical exercise tests and measurements, 2) assessment of physical activity (PA) habits of adults and the relationship of those habits to health and disease, and 3) cardiovascular and metabolic responses to exercise training in moderate and high-risk populations. Clinical Assessment Evaluations Outcome measurements have become essential for many clinical programs. The CEP Program has been studying the accuracy and reliability of laboratory instruments used to measure muscular fitness and physical activity. Data collection has recently been completed on studies examining the usefulness of new resistance exercise equipment (Magnum Body Motion) and the accuracy and reliability of accelerometers to provide energy expenditure measures during running. The first study was funded in part by a grant from Magnum, Inc. Assessment of PA and Relationship to Health and Disease The prevalence of sedentary lifestyle remains high in the United States. The CEP Program is conducting a number of studies examining physical activity habits of adults in East Central Indiana. This study will be extended in 2007 to evaluate seasonal changes in physical activity among adults in East Central Indiana. We also extend these assessments to patients with cardiac disease in collaboration with colleagues at Ball Memorial Hospital. Data collection has recently been completed on a study evaluating the effect of a structured exercise program on daily physical activity levels of previously sedentary adults. Additionally, we are presently extending our studies on the physical activity habits of individuals with chronic diseases to those with pulmonary disease and cancer. Specifically, we are evaluating the role a Rehabilitation Program has on physical activity levels of these patients. One other major area of interest and active work is examining instruments used to monitor physical activity. We are working with colleagues from Wake Forest University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to evaluate the validity of the two most commonly used accelerometers. Cardiovascular and Metabolic Responses to Exercise Training The CEP Program has studied a number of different responses, both acute and chronic, to exercise training. We recently completed the second stage of a study on the role exercise training can play in preventing the hyperglycemic effect associated with the use of niacin as a pharacological therapy for lipid disorders in patients with Type-II diabetes. This study assessed advanced lipid and lipoprotein measures including LDL subfractions, HDL subfractions, VLDL subfractions, Lp(a), and hsCRP.
