Summer Semester 2008 One-Week Workshops

Sport & Physical Education Workshops

All workshops are for 3-credit hours.  When registering for a workshop, it is important to know wheter the course is offered in Summer Session I (only during the weeks of May 12-June 13), Summer Session II (only during the weeks of June 16-July 18), or during the Summer Semester.  


Summer Session:  May 12 – May 16, 2008

PEP 620 001W  Facilities and Event Management                              3 credits

Course Ref #19172   Monday-Friday, 12 noon - 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Scope: Study of the principles and theories involving the overall planning and management of indoor and outdoor facilities for sport/recreation/physical education.  Topics will include facility development, problem solving, time management, financial administration, policy-making, scheduling, and public relations.

PEP 692 001W Sport Supervision                                                         3 credits

Scope: Development of supervision policies and procedures for use with coaches and other athletic personnel.

SPTAD 611 001W  Sport Marketing and Promotion                           3 credits

Scope:  The application of the principles of promotion and marketing to the sport and fitness industry including the area of professional sports, corporate fitness, college/high school athletics, clubs and resorts.

PEP 612 001W  Motor Development                                                    3 credits

Scope   Lifespan human motor development emphasizing major theoretical viewpoints, research methodology, and conditions affecting motor development including physical growth, physiological change, perceptual change, cognitive change, sociocultural practices, and intervention.

PEP 616 001W  Developing Motor Behavior, Theory into Practice   3 credits

Scope: Focuses on developing an understanding of movement and skill learning and on improving observation, assessment, and instructional strategies. Laboratory experience offers opportunities to develop proficiency in using a variety of direct and indirect teaching styles. Required for Elementary School Physical Education Certification

SPTAD 676 001W  Sport Administration                                             3 credits

Scope:    Administrative theory and guidelines for the operation of sports programs at the interscholastic and intercollegiate levels. An overview of changing emphasis in the operation of sports programs, administrative theory as the framework for decision making, a look at athletics in current societal thought, and consideration of sound practices in the various areas of athletic administration.

PEP 695 001W  Current Teaching Methodology in PE                       3 credits

Scope:  Methods for improving the effectiveness of teaching physical education. Different teaching styles, classroom management, assessment, program promotions, and issues in physical education are included.

Scope: Introduces students to the interrelationship between sport and American society.  Emphasis is placed on a critical examination of sport (interscholastic, intercollegiate, and professional) to determine its role as well as its impact on American Society (e.g., Is commercial sport dependent upon the media? Is sport accessible to all populations?)

Scope: Designed to acquaint learners with various types of performance-based assessments and show how they can be integrated into the curriculum to enhance student learning.

Course Ref # 19245  Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-12 noon, 1:00 pm-5:30 pm

Scope: The study of legal issues related to all aspects of amateur sports and the professional sports industry.  Emphasis on risk management and structure of sports organizations.  In addition, current issues which face the industry will be explored.
