She has M.A.s in religious studies and history, also from IU. She received her undergraduate degree in history from Brown University. Dr. Agnew specializes in Religion in American Culture, Religion and Social Ethics, and Gender Issues in Religion and Ethics. Her research focuses on Protestant traditions and progressive social reform, and on religious and secular discourses about needs and rights. Her research on social reform and social work leader Mary Richmond appears in the edited collection Gender and the Social Gospel (Illinois, 2003) and in her book From Charity to Social Work: Mary Richmond and the Creation of an American Profession (Illinois, 2004). The latter was named an Outstanding Academic Title for 2004 by Choice Magazine, a publication of the Association of College Research Libraries.
