PHILOSOPHY CLUB
The Philosophy Club is a forum for philosophical discussion and peer education. The only requirement for membership is an eagerness to participate in lively discussion of important issues in our lives and the ability to respect other individuals who may defend divergent positions on such important issues. It is not necessary to be a Philosophy major or minor to participate. Everyone is welcome to participate.
Activities of the Philosophy Club include student led discussions, trips to professional philosophical meetings, guest speakers, student presentations, fund-raising activities, picnics, games, and perhaps most importantly fellowship. Discussion topics are selected by the members of the club, and have ranged across a variety of intellectual, political, ethical, and spiritual topics over the years. Currently, Dr. Jeff Fry, (jfry@bsu.edu) is the advisor.
Officers are elected by the student membership. Weekly meetings are typically held in the late afternoon on Thursdays. To contact an officer or find further information, visit the Philosophy Club website: http://philclub.iweb.bsu.edu/.
PHI SIGMA TAU
In 1994, Ball State University's Philosophy department became the Indiana Epsilon chapter of Phi Sigma Tau. The objectives of the society are to (1) serve as a means of awarding distinction to students having high scholarship and personal interest in philosophy; (2) promote student interest in research and advanced study in this field; (3) provide opportunities for the publication of student research papers of merit; (4) encourage a professional spirit and friendship among those who have displayed marked ability in this field; (5) and popularize interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public.
Recently, Phi Sigma Tau members have begun peer editing Stance, a Ball State University Undergraduate Philosophy Journal to highlight some of the best work of students within the department.
The criteria for membership are:
1. Sophomore standing;
2. Completed (or registered for) at least two courses of philosophy
3. GPA above 3.0
There is also a nominal membership fee. As a member, you become a subscriber to Dialogue, a biannual undergraduate philosophy journal. Watch for information regarding membership in February. New members are formally inducted during Departmental Recognition Day in April. For more information click on the "Events and Recognition" link.
