Careers in Philosophy

A philosophy degree is more practical than most people believe. Philosophy is an appropriate major or minor for students preparing for jobs that require a liberal arts education and skills in critical thinking, concept analysis, interpersonal communication, and decision making.

Philosophy is excellent preparation for careers in law, public service, government agencies, writing, and literary criticism, as well as for religion oriented jobs. Skills in logical thinking and "relating parts to the whole" are useful in management as well. In fact, the problem solving that you learn in philosophy can be useful in many types of jobs.

Many graduates who pursue careers in philosophy consider teaching in colleges or universities. Some philosophers teach in junior colleges, and some high schools now include classes in philosophy.
