Liaisons - Secondary (08/28/06)

Professional Development Schools Network
Secondary Liaisons' Meeting
Monday, August 28, 2006
TC 823B
2:30 p.m.

Attendance: Karen Dowling, Jane Hughes, Pat Moore, Cathy Siebert, Theresa Richardson, Ruth Swetnam

  • Lists of the 2006-07 professional development schools and partnership schools were given to the liaisons. There are seven secondary PDSs. Ruth was asked to check how this number of secondary PDSs compares to the number in other teacher education programs.
  • Liaisons were asked for any changes for the 2006-07 PDS Directory.   They were also encouraged to check the information about their schools on the PDS Web site (www.bsu.edu/pds) for changes.
  • Ruth is scheduling fall visits to each PDS at which time she will deliver the checks. She collected the liaisons' PDS schedules and will communicate possible dates for these visits.
  • Shortridge M.S. and Southside H.S. should have site visits during 2006-07. Because both schools are involved in many changes, the site visits will not be scheduled fall semester and an appropriate time will be considered later.
  • The Secondary Teacher Education Information Fair is Thursday, September 14, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in Pruis Hall.

  • Pat Moore has had a request from Central H.S. for assistance with scoring of the school's math test. She would like to know if Ball State has such help available. Ruth will make some inquiries.
  • Discussion about the fall Institute meeting centered around possible topics of interest. Suggested themes were reading comprehension, cultural competence, technology, parent involvement, single-gender classrooms, and resources through local museums. Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Eugene White was recommended as a possible speaker on single-gender classrooms and his plans for raising achievement in IPS.   Gail Ring could possibly lead an interactive session on trends in technology. Tania Said, Curator of Education at the BSU Museum of Art, would probably be happy to explain the educational resources available. Some of the meeting time could be devoted to developing summaries of resources available in each PDS that could be included on the PDS Web site. Liaisons will discuss possibilities with their site councils. Ruth is asking for volunteers from PDSs to help create an agenda for the meeting.
  • A possible date for the fall Institute meeting is Wednesday, November 29. Ruth will be sending an e-mail to all PDSs to check this date.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
