11:00 a.m.
Teachers College 828
Summary
Attendance: Jane Hughes, Jim Powell, Alba Rosenman, Tom Schroeder, Cathy Siebert, Ruth Swetnam, Ruth Warren, Dean Weaver- Ruth distributed the National Staff Development Council annual conference program booklets to liaisons. The conference is December 7-10 in New Orleans. Title II will sponsor teams of three. Teams that include an administrator, teacher, and liaison are encouraged. Jackie Stillisano hopes to send the conference applications out by Friday, September 26.
- Dean Weaver expressed appreciation for all of the work being done by the liaisons in the schools. He spoke of the pride Ball State can have for the number of communities in Indiana in which Teachers College is heavily involved.
- Tom Schroeder and Jim Powell led a discussion concerning the Learning Assessment Model Project (LAMP). LAMP was piloted in Central and Wilson during 2002-2003. Jim said, "Every student who finished it, had a good time with it." Tom encouraged the liaisons to use as many LAMP procedures as possible. LAMP is not required, but secondary PDS liaisons have agreed to use LAMP in all PDSs.
- Ruth announced that the 2003-2004 PDS Network includes 24 Professional Development Schools. The four planning partners are Apple Tree Child Development Center, Burris, Muncie Boys and Girls Club, and Southside High School. The group agreed that more discussion about the Ball State concept of a professional development school needs to take place. Although Larry Smith had recommended at the Elementary Liaisons' Meeting that an elementary and a secondary liaison be assigned to Burris, the Department of Educational Studies will not be able to assign a liaison.
- Ruth shared Anderson's PDS newsletter and the Urban Semester brochure as examples of impressive marketing tools. Cathy explained that the newsletter was Anderson Highland site council's idea for getting word throughout the community about what is going on as a result of the PDS relationship.
- Ruth Warren entertained a discussion of ideas for the two issues of the newsletter this year. Among the ideas were articles that address how the PDS partnership supports the school improvement plans, how we are reshaping the next generation's teachers through PDSs, and the benefits of the secondary model in which students have their practicum and student teaching experience in the same school. Articles need to be sent to Ruth by the end of November.
- The Holmes Conference is January 16-17, 2004 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego. Cathy Siebert and Carol Hill have had a proposal accepted.
- The fall Institute meeting is November 4 at the Minnetrista Cultural Center/Oakhurst Gardens. The spring meeting will be in Anderson for the secondary representatives. The elementary representatives are meeting at Indianapolis Children's Museum.
- The Secondary Teachers Education Fair is Thursday, September 25th, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Arts and Journalism Building. Cathy indicated that the format for this event may change next year and move away from recruiting and more toward a showcase.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
