PDS Functions/Goals
Teacher Preparation
Goal:
Place student teachers and sections of EDRDG 430 at St. Mary.
Progress:
Three student teachers were placed at St. Mary during the 2005-2006 academic year. The literacy block was not offered this year because it is on hold until the Elementary Education and English department can support this unique field experience. During the spring and fall semester one section of EDRDG 430 was held at St. Mary in Mrs. Goldstein's 3rd-grade classroom during the day. Also, preservice teachers in EDRDG 400, taught lessons in first- and third-grade classrooms during the first summer session. Math methods students (MTHS 393) taught lessons in the middle school. The math department at BSU has been contacted to request a section of their math methods section be held at St. Mary. Student teacher applicants were interviewed during the spring 2006, and four student teachers will be placed at St. Mary during 2006-2007.
Future Goal:
Continue to place BSU preservice teachers in practicums and as student teachers.
Staff Development
Goal:
Teachers will focus on the math goal in their school improvement plan.
Progress:
Throughout the year, teachers attended a variety of conferences (numerous state conferences related to NCA and the NCA National Conference in Chicago). Beth Bremigan (math professor) conducted several math inservices with the teachers. Also, two teachers (Cristin Noesen and Melea Goldstein) will present as a part of a panel at the NCTE Annual Conference in November 2006 (conference proposal accepted).
Future Goal:
Teachers will continue to focus on the math goal in their school improvement plan.
Research
Goal:
Data analysis of student learning from the literacy block and EDRDG 430 will be completed. In addition, student learning in math will be determined.
Progress:
Baseline data for writing was collected in the fall and in the spring. Student learning in math computation was calculated for the NCA documentation report.
Future Goal:
To continue to evaluate student learning in the math computation goal and to evaluate the effectiveness of the Saxon Math Program.
Student Learning
Goal:
During the 2005-2006 academic year, teachers will examine student learning in math and writing.
Progress:
Our focus was on math this year. Data from ISTEP, ITBS, and Star Math was analyzed to determine program effectiveness, cohort learning, and individual progress.
Future Goal:
To continue our efforts with the math goal and determine any other areas for future NCA goals.
