Executive Director Position Description*

The Indiana Recycling Coalition (IRC) seeks an Executive Director.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Indiana Recycling Coalition is to support source reduction, reuse, composting and recycling activities in Indiana. To encourage integrated recycling, the Coalition supports buying recycled-content products, and the collection and remanufacturing of recyclable materials. The goal of this support is to conserve our natural resources, decrease reliance on final disposal and to encourage environmental responsibility.  

Activities: IRC works to achieve its mission by holding an annual conference; convening educational forums; creating networking opportunities; disseminating timely information; and initiating cooperative dialogue among our diverse membership. IRC also participates in outreach activities at various conferences and other events, and to the public through its three web sites. IRC has 150 members from the government, business, nonprofit, and at-large sectors, with a near-term goal of increasing membership to 215. IRC is the Indiana affiliate of the National Recycling Coalition.  IRC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. 

Staff: The Executive Director position is a full-time position and currently is the sole staff person.  The Executive Director will work from their home in the Indianapolis/Marion County area. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the organization and reports to the Board of Directors and its four-member Executive Committee. Working together, the Executive Director and the 20 member Board of Directors set up and execute the strategic direction of the organization.  The engagement/hiring and termination of contractors, interns, assistants and other employees is done only with Board authorization. 

Job duties

Public outreach: Coordinate with local and state governments, trade associations, and the media to provide recycling education materials to the general public and to specific audiences as necessary.  This will include representing the Coalition to the press, at various local and national meetings and forums, and at selected National Recycling Coalition meetings.

Government affairs:  The successful candidate will coordinate with the IRC's contracted lobbyist to monitor legislative activity and report to the membership. Depending on the wishes of the Board of Directors, the successful candidate may be asked to talk to legislators about recycling, reuse, and composting issues.

Media:  IRC desires to communicate regularly with print, radio, and TV media to promote recycling.  The successful candidate will maintain media lists, write intermittent press releases, and follow-up with interested media outlets.

Member services:  The Executive Director will maintain records of members, conference attendees, prospective members; send out annual renewal notices; maintain the IRC Web sites; and support the Membership committee in membership drives.

Financial Responsibilities:  The Executive Director will initiate and/or approve general administrative expenditures (ordinary expenses such as the purchase of supplies, equipment repair, etc.) up to $500; prepare monthly financial reports for Board; work with Finance Committee to develop an annual budget; and oversee the preparation of tax returns and the yearly financial audit or review. 

Fundraising:  The Executive Director is responsible for raising at least $50,000 annually for the organization through annual conference sponsorships and attendee fees, membership dues, special events and workshops, corporate contributions, government and private sector grants, and earned income (e.g., ink cartridge and cell phone recycling programs). 

Event Planning: The Executive Director works with the conference committee to plan and implement an annual conference and exhibition. Planning and coordinating other events, such as workshops and fundraisers, may also be required.

Administrative Duties:  The Executive Director is responsible for all of the day-to-day communications (answering the telephone, responding to mail and email inquiries), and bookkeeping (accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, etc). He/she will purchase services and supplies as needed.  Periodically, he/she may be required to manage a grant and keep related financial records.

     The Executive Director will assist and advise the Board in its policy-making functions; facilitate monthly Board of Directors (BOD) and Executive Committee meetings; and work directly with and supporting BOD committees and task forces.  The Director will attend Northern Indiana Recycling Initiative (NIRI) and Southern Indiana Recycling Initiative (SIRI) meetings as needed and work directly with and support these standing committees.

Preferred education & skills

  • Bachelor's degree or two years of relevant experience in a nonprofit organization or in an environmental field

  • Good customer service skills

  • Good writing skills

  • Good public speaking skills

  •  Experience in fundraising, donor development, and grant acquisition/management

  • Experience in conference /event planning

  • Familiarity with environmental issues, especially recycling and/or composting, waste reduction, and reuse

  • Familiarity with databases, web-based applications, spreadsheets, and basic accounting principles; QuickBooks experience preferred

Salary: $35,000+ depending on experience.

HENRY COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION

WATERSHED COORDINATOR

Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking a Watershed Coordinator for a grant funded contract position with a two-year completion date for the Big Blue River Watershed. This individual should be enthusiastic, self-motivated, creative, outgoing, and have both  verbal and written communication skills. The individual will be responsible for organizing and initiating the development of a Big Blue River Watershed Management Plan; bringing together stakeholders to establish watershed awareness and conducting information campaign through various media sources, outreach, and educational programs.

Applicants should have a Bachelors degree or equivalent experience/skills in natural resources/watershed management. Submit a resume with a cover letter highlighting experience and any other skills relevant to listed qualifications and responsibilities. Also, include references.
