Alaska Field Study

Students and Dr. Pichtel enjoy exploring Denali National Park

Participants have taken a tour of Prince William Sound (site of the Exxon Valdez accident), engaged in field ecology tours, visited sites of archaeological interest, observed gold mining sites, and explored Chugach National Forest and Denali National Park.

There has also been a boat tour of the south coast to observe glacial and geologic processes and marine life.

The groups have met with government agencies and attended seminars on Alaska's energy and mining policy, park and forest management, the fishing industry and wildlife conservation.

The field study is led by Dr. John Pichtel, Professor of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (WQ 103, 285-2182, jpichtel@bsu.edu).

A total of 6 credits are available in NREM 402/502, Natural Resources of a Geographic Area. Travel throughout the study will be by van. Accomodations include hotels, university dormitories, and camping. The estimated cost for this unique educational experience, including airfare, lodging, meals and ground transportation, is $1900, plus tuition for 6 credit hours.
