Ball State University student wins prestigious Udall Scholarship

Carissa Buchholz, of Crown Point, Indiana, was named a winner of the 2008 Morris K. Udall Scholarship.   She just completed her sophomore year in Natural Resources and Environmental Management, where her focus is Natural Resource Studies.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation was authorized by Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Udall's legacy of public service.   The Udall Scholarship competition is aimed at sophomores and juniors intending to pursue careers related to the environment, tribal health care, or tribal policy.  More information about the competition and the foundation is available at http://udall.gov.

Carissa plans to build a career in the field of renewable energy.  The campus president of Students for a Sustainable Campus, she is one of only 22 sophomores to be named a Udall Scholar this year.  There were 80 scholars selected this year from a pool of 510 applicants nominated by 239 colleges and universities nationwide.

"The Udall scholarship is truly a blessing for me," said Carissa. "It will help me accomplish my life time goal of becoming a renewable energy specialist."  Besides winning a $5,000 scholarship, Carissa will also travel to Tucson, Arizona, this summer to receive her award and meet policy-makers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal health care, and tribal governance.

Buchholz is the fourth Ball State student to be named a Udall Scholar in the last four years.  She is the daughter of Susan and Howard Buchholz of Crown Point.  Other Udall Scholars from Ball State University include Kyle Lueken, 2005 winner, and Lauren DuCharme and Naomi Lewis, both 2007 winners.  Mona Luxion was given an honorable mention in 2007.

Potential applicants for future Udall Scholarships should investigate information at www.bsu.edu/honors/scholarships/ and contact Dr. Barb Stedman in the Honors College.
