Ball State planetarium features 'Marsquest' (2/12/2003)
MUNCIE, Ind. - Mars and the potential exploration of the planet by humans will be examined this month at the Ball State University planetarium

"MarsQuest" traces Mars through human history from the war-god image given by early cultures to the observations of the infamous "canals," which led to science-fiction stories about Martians.

The program will review how Mars has been examined from its appearance in the night sky through binoculars, telescopes and the exploratory missions of Viking, Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor. The climate and terrain of Earth and Mars also will be compared.

The program will examine the rationale for future exploration of the planet, including how humans will prepare to live on Mars, what will be needed to get missions with human crews there and what the first landing may be like.

Shows begin at 7 and 8 p.m. Feb. 14, 15, 21 and 22.

Planetarium shows are free. No tickets are required, but seating is limited. Plan to arrive early for the best seats. This program is suited for adults and children older than age 8.

Weather permitting, the campus observatory will be open after the presentation. The observatory is not heated so patrons are urged to dress accordingly.

The planetarium is located in the southeast corner of the lower level of the Cooper Science Complex in CP 90. Parking is available on the west end of Cooper and along Riverside Avenue on the north side of Christy Woods.

Doors open 20 minutes before show time. No one will be admitted after the program begins. Children 12 years and under should be accompanied by an adult. The program lasts about 40 minutes.
