Committee releases desired presidential qualifications (11/17/1999)
These are the desired presidential qualifications presented by Academic Search Consultation Service to the Ball State University Presidential Search Committee.

The 13-member committee will recommend candidates for a new university president to the Board of Trustees.

The qualifications listed below are listed in no particular order.

  • The ability to interact effectively and comfortably with a diverse constituency that includes the citizens of Muncie, legislators, the Board of Trustees, the University Foundation and potential donors throughout the region. And, the credibility, rooted in the academic world, to the intellectual leader of the University and an intellectual presence throughout the state and region.

  • A sense of vision - and the ability to involve trustees in the shaping of that vision - which will take Ball State University to the next level, to be one of the finest Doctoral I institutions in the country.

  • The ability to work within the University’s system of shared governance, and the courage - once issues have been fully discussed - to move against the perceived consensus, to make difficult, sometimes unpopular decisions.

  • A record as a successful fund-raiser with legislators, alumni, major donors, corporations and foundations.

  • A sensitivity to all aspects of institutional marketing that will enable the next president to provide the vision to strengthen enrollment, enhance community relations and work effectively with regional and national media.

  • The ability - and the passion - to persuasively articulate the importance and value of a public Doctoral I university committed to excellence in teaching and research.

  • An appreciation and understanding of Ball State’s history and its values as a university committed to both serving the region and the State to establishing a valid alternative, in the public sector, between liberal arts colleges and research universities.

  • The interpersonal skills and integrity that will foster a sense of community and common purpose among all the university’s constituencies.

  • Strong analytical skills and astute judgment relating to such matters as budgeting in a constantly shifting environment, strategic planning and governmental relations.

  • The ability to identify, recruit and retain and outstanding management team and to create an atmosphere of trust and collegiality throughout the university.

  • A commitment to achieving diversity in the student body, the faculty and staff.

  • A terminal degree - with preference given to the Ph.D. - in the candidate’s area of study.
