MUNCIE, Ind.– A respected scholar and academic leader with strong ties to the Midwest has been named Ball State University’s Dean of Sciences and Humanities.
Michael A. Maggiotto, dean of the School of Letters and Sciences at the State University of New York Brockport, will assume his post at Ball State on July 1.
“Ball State is extremely fortunate to have Mike join its ranks,” said Beverley Pitts, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “As a sitting dean, he brings with him a wealth of experience in academic leadership that will be a tremendous asset as our College of Sciences and Humanities furthers its reputation for excellence.”
Maggiotto is a professor of political science whose credentials include writing two books, dozens of articles, book chapters, book reviews, and other scholarly works, and holding leadership positions at SUNY Brockport and Bowling Green State University.
Maggiotto is delighted to accept the opportunity to work with an institution that is responsive to life in the 21st century, he said.
“Whether we’re talking about the staggering advances in science and technology or the important questions of ethics and values that challenge us almost daily, the expertise in sciences and humanities is essential to both,” he said. “Sciences and humanities lie at the core of the intellectual, moral and creative endeavors that will lead to the advances of the 21st century.”
SUNY Brockport’s School of Letters and Sciences has 17 departments and five programs. That is similar in scope to Ball State’s College of Sciences and Humanities, which has 20 departments and the Social Science Research Center, but Ball State’s college is larger.
Maggiotto succeeds Ronald Johnstone, who retired as dean on June 30, and Donald Van Meter, who has served as interim dean since then.
“The entire campus is grateful for Don’s leadership,” Pitts said. “He did an outstanding job of guiding the college as it began working toward its goals in support of the university’s five-year strategic plan.”
Those who met Maggiotto during his visit to campus were impressed by his understanding of the balance required to excel in teaching and scholarship, Pitts said. He also displayed a wide range of knowledge in the humanities, physical sciences and sociological sciences that constitute the college.
That knowledge grew out of his curious nature, Maggiotto said.
“We’re asking fundamental questions that affect everyone’s life, and to find the answers you must collaborate with colleagues across a broad spectrum of disciplines. As you do, you get more excited about finding new levels of explanation to these questions.”
Born in western New York, Magiotto spent 11 years at Bowling Green and earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in political science from Indiana University.
“I’m excited about returning to the Midwest,” he said. “I like the people and the pace, and it’s a place where I feel at home.”
