Campus community sets $2.1 million campaign goal (2/11/2000)
MUNCIE, Ind. - A goal of $2.1 million has been set to be raised by the campus community for Above and Beyond, the Campaign to Advance Ball State University.

The campaign will raise $90 million for scholarships and assistantships, innovative academic programs and capital projects, including a new student center and stadium improvements.

President John E. Worthen said the significance of the campus portion of the campaign is to set an example.

"When we ask alumni and friends to contribute to the fund drive, it's important to be able to explain that commitments have been made by those of us who will benefit most from the money raised," he said. "I hope you will join with me in giving above and beyond your annual contribution."

The campaign will have a direct impact on the lives of university employees in the form of bright students and outstanding programs, said Erwin Mueller, Sursa Distinguished Professor in Fine Arts and professor in the School of Music.

"Gifts can be specified to go where the donor wants them to go," he said. "Faculty can give to their own colleges or departments in the areas they care most for."

Mueller is co-chair of the campus campaign with M. Kay Stickle, professor of elementary education. Campaign cabinet members are Deborah Balogh, dean of the Graduate School; Gary Santoni, George and Francis Ball Distinguished Professor of Economics; Don Mikesell, dean of students, Student Affairs; Nancy Behforouz, professor of biology; and Tom Mertens, George and Francis Ball Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biology Education.

Mueller said the campaign will pull the campus together for a common cause. "We're all in this community together, all working for the university," he said. "But we need to put something back into the community. We're all on the same team here, trying to make Ball State the best place it can be."

Campus meetings will provide information on gift alternatives, including gifts of stock and life insurance and gifts through life income arrangements and wills.
