Area business, civic leaders to tout community to students (2/13/2003)
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University students may talk with business and civic leaders Feb. 27 to learn more about opportunities for staying in the area long after graduating.

Representatives of 30 businesses and nonprofit agencies will attend "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood...Living and Working in Muncie and Delaware County."  The free program is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Art and Journalism Building.

The event is designed to provide students with information about the community, said Thomas J. Kinghorn, Ball State's vice president for business affairs.

"This local employer showcase will give students and local organizations the opportunity to network and talk about living, working, advancing a career and raising a family in the Muncie community," he said. "We want students to realize that Muncie and Delaware County have a lot to offer."

The event is a joint effort by Ball State and Vision 2006, the economic development program for the Muncie-Delaware County area. Kinghorn is the executive committee chairman for the technology initiative component of Vision 2006.

Vision 2006 is Muncie-Delaware County's five-year program to foster job growth and economic development in the community. The program encompasses several goals including the expansion and retention of current businesses and the recruitment of knowledge-based businesses to the area. The Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Advancement Corporation are project administrators.

The program is being coordinated by Ball State's Career Center. Ball State faculty are encourage to promote the program during their classes.
