UC official to open Black History Month at Ball State (1/31/2003)
MUNCIE, Ind. - A University of Cincinnati official will give the opening address Feb. 5 as part of Black History Month activities at Ball State University.

The Rev. William Harris, director of the Center for Community Engagement at the University of Cincinnati, will discuss "Fight the Power: African-American Students on Predominantly White Campuses."

His address begins at 7:30 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall A. It is free and open to the public.

At the University of Cincinnati, Harris works with student development on leadership, outreach and education.  He is a licensed minister and works with the youth minister at Zion Baptist Church.

Harris also is the associate director of American Baptist Campus Ministries and founder of the Foundation for Higher Opportunities for Progress through Education (HOPE).

Other events scheduled include:

* Feb. 13 - Chicago filmmaker Mark Yucan will discuss "Blacks in the Movies" at 7 p.m. in the Art and Journalism Building, room 175.

* Feb. 18 - Hip hop pioneer Doug E. Fresh and Jessica Care Moore, a poet, will be the speakers for "Hip Hop Conversation" at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

* Feb. 19 - Black History 101, a student-led discussion of African-American issues, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Teachers College, room 101.

* Feb. 26 - Black History 101 will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Teachers College, 102.

* Feb. 27 - Essence Cafe, which will feature students reading poetry and performing jazz tunes, will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center Tally.
