David L. Arnold, an associate professor of meteorology and climatology, will instruct participants about the dynamics of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, storm structure and how to identify storm features in the field.
Other topics include strategies on driving a vehicle during inclement weather, escape routes and spotter safety.
Volunteer weather spotters are used throughout the nation to report visual storm observations to local emergency management agencies that set off civil defense sirens.
Dates and class titles include:
- Feb. 12 - Basic Spotter Training.
- Feb. 19 - Intermediate Spotter Training.
- Feb. 26 - Advanced Spotter Training.
Classes will meet from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. in Cooper Science Building, room CN 160. Parking is available along McKinley Avenue and in a lot between Christy Woods and Cooper Science Building. Additional parking may be found north of Cooper Science Building along University Avenue.
The workshops are co-sponsored by the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency and Ball State's Department of Geography.
