SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Ball State University President John E. Worthen was installed as chair of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) at the association's annual meeting here Tuesday.

Worthen served as chair-elect of the association during the past year after being selected for the post by the AASCU Nominating Committee and elected by the membership. AASCU is a Washington-based higher education association of more than 425 public colleges and universities and higher education systems across the United States and U.S. territories.

A member of AASCU since 1979, Worthen has been active in the association as a member of the Board of Directors, chair of the association's Council of Doctoral Degree-Granting Universities and a faculty member of the AASCU New Presidents' Academy.

Worthen has served as president of Ball State since 1984. Previously, he was president of Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1984. He has been a member of the association's Capital Fund Board of Trustees and the Committees on Information Technologies and Learning, External Relations and Governance.

Worthen earned a B.A. in psychology from Northwestern University, an M.A. in student personnel administration from Columbia University, and an Ed.D in counseling psychology and administration in higher education from Harvard. He holds an honorary doctorate of philosophy from Yeungnam University in Daegu, Korea.
