Education scholarship established in memory of alumnus and his wife (3/1/2010)
Ball State alumnus Jon White of Fishers has donated $25,000 in memory of his parents to create the Ozora T. and Maxine White Scholarship.

Ozora T. "Tom" White received his bachelor's degree in 1938 and his master's degree in 1947 from Ball State Teachers College. He began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse until he moved to Anderson, Ind., in 1933. He served the Anderson Community Schools for 40 years as a teacher and elementary and junior high school principal at Central Avenue, Westvale and Madison Heights junior high schools. He then served as director of pupil personnel services until he retired in 1973.

White was a member of the Wesley Foundation, National Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association and Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity. He was also lay leader of First United Methodist Church in Anderson and was a past president and active member of the Anderson Exchange Club.

Maxine White graduated from Manchester College in 1937 and began her teaching career in Auburn, Ind. She and her husband met at Central Avenue School in the early 1950s. She taught third grade at Longfellow and Meadowbrook schools in Anderson before retiring in 1979.

Their son, Jon, received his master's degree from Ball State in 1979.

The scholarship is for a graduate of a Madison County, Ind., high school who is a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student majoring in education. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Availability of the Ozora T. and Maxine White Scholarship is dependent upon an award selection process established by Ball State and its academic departments.  For specifics about this scholarship and others, contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at 765-285-5600 or visit www.bsu.edu/finaid.
