MUNCIE, Ind. The Ball State University Police
Department was recently featured in the premier issue of INSIGHT, a
newsletter published by the North Central Indiana Law Enforcement Training
Council, Inc.
The article explains that the department is a full-time,
sworn law enforcement agency consisting of 32 full-time officers and about
25 special deputy officers. They also have two K-9 units primarily for
drug enforcement.
Ball State police officers, headed by Chief Joseph Wehner, have full police powers and their responsibilities are primarily focused on campus. Under an agreement with the city of Muncie they also patrol areas in the city near campus that are frequented by students.
Officers are active in programs that allow student and public input such as Cardinal Roundtable and the Public Safety Committee. They also give hundreds of presentations each year on and off campus dealing with crime prevention and community relations.
