Student emergency aid fund profits from sale of calendar (4/3/2002)
Profits from sale of the Calendar of Events Handbook are being used to assist students on campus.

At a ceremony Friday, TIS, CBX, Barnes and Noble and the L.A. Pittenger Student Center presented Douglas McConkey, vice president for student affairs, a check for $11,000 for the Student Emergency Aid Fund.

What was once given away because it included, by law, a mandatory "Student Code" section, is now sold. When the code section was removed and funding relocated, the challenge became how to produce the book.

Jan Gaff, communication/program specialist and production coordinator, said the hardest decision was to sell the book. Giving the profits away to help Ball State students was, she said, the incentive that led to the current production process.

"We are excited about what we are doing, and how we are adapting to changes in our production of the Calendar of Events Handbook," Gaff said. "I believe we are taking a positive and exciting new step."

Additional changes include selling more advertisements to offset costs and adding pictures of students in their daily routines on campus.

The Calendar of Events Handbook began nearly 40 years ago with just a 45-page plastic spiral bound book with a beige, cardboard-like texture cover and simple black lettering. It has evolved into a sleeker 192-page wire-bound book with a four-color cover.

Profits from the book will be given to the Student Emergency Aid Fund (SEAF). The fund offers temporary financial assistance in emergency situations. SEAF consists of several funds that have been established by parents, students, alumni and friends of the university. It is available to all students by going to the Office of the Dean of Students, AD 238, to complete an application.
