2007 major scholarship recipients announced (10/7/2007)
Students applying to Ball State are better prepared than ever before to handle the rigors of the curriculum. The ability to recruit high-achieving students contributes greatly to the immersive learning environment Ball State fosters. The university and the Ball State University Foundation are proud to welcome these new outstanding students whose efforts in high school and potential for success have earned them major scholarship awards.

Edwards Memorial Scholarship 2007 - The Edwards Memorial Scholarships encourage outstanding freshmen to enter Ball State and complete a major in a program directed by the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The endowment for these scholarships was established by Harry and Jane Edwards McColm in memory of P.D. Edwards, chairman of the department from 1951 to 1962.

Ellison Scholars 2007 - Named for lifelong Muncie resident and Warner Gear employee Harold Ellison, the Ellison Scholarships provide in-state tuition, room and board at Ball State to graduates of high schools in Delaware County. Recipients are selected based on academic performance; special skills in fine and performing arts, writing or athletics; and leadership and participation in school and community activities.

Emens Scholars 2007 - The John R. and Aline B. Emens Scholars program was established to honor the former Ball State president and his wife who made a strong commitment to recognize student leadership and develop student potential. The program recognizes outstanding student leaders and encourages recipients to continue to develop their leadership skills at Ball State.

Honors College Scholars 2007 - Recipients are selected each year from an incoming class of about 400 students. The finalists are selected based on high academic performance, and the awards are based upon written submissions and oral interviews.

Moore Scholars 2007 - The Mildred Moore Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in family and consumer sciences at Ball State. The four-year renewable scholarships were initiated in the 1998-99 academic year.

National Achievement Scholars 2007 - The National Achievement Program, a privately financed, academic competition, was established in 1964 specifically to honor scholastically talented African-American students and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition.

National Hispanic Scholars 2007 - The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. HSF was founded in 1975 with a vision to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanics, the largest minority segment of the U.S. population.

National Merit Scholars 2007 - The National Merit Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen who are finalists in the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test competition during their junior year of high school and who indicate Ball State as their first college choice. Students must maintain a high grade point average during their senior year and receive letters of recommendation from their principals and members of the community. The award is renewable for up to three years.

Washington Metro Scholars 2007 - Founded by international educator and environmentalist Avis Robinson and journalist Eugene Robinson, the Washington Metropolitan Scholarship is granted by partner universities to African-American high school seniors who display academic and leadership abilities. These recipients are selected from nominees recommended by their schools as the most outstanding achievers in the classroom and the community.

Whitinger Scholarships 2007 - Ralph Whitinger, a 1929 graduate of Ball State, served as president of the Ball State University Foundation from 1952 until his death in 1982. In recognition of his long record of distinguished service to the university, the Whitinger Scholars program honors academically superior students each year.
