Building healthy schools is topic of Indy workshop (3/22/2002)
MUNCIE, Ind. - Designing and building healthy schools that improve academic performance is the focus of an April 24-25 workshop in Indianapolis hosted by Ball State University.

The High-Performance School Buildings Workshop at the NCAA Conference Center is for architects, engineers, school superintendents, school procurement officers, and building and construction managers.

This practical two-day workshop is presented by the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and Ball State. Other local sponsors include Ice Miller, H.J. Umbaugh and the Indiana Department of Commerce's Energy Policy Division.

Experts in sustainable design and school building procurement will discuss building energy- and resource-efficient schools using proven methods and cost-effective, "whole building" design strategies.

Participants will learn how to achieve facilities that support better student attendance and higher test scores, significantly reduce operating costs, and promote teacher retention and occupant health.

Studies have shown a direct link between improved academic performance and schools that integrate sustainable design components such as daylighting and natural ventilation.

Day one focuses on procuring high-performance school buildings and targets school superintendents, assistant superintendents, school business officials and school board members. Day two explores school building design with instruction for architects, engineers and school facility planners.

Registration is due March 29. Cost is $119 for one day or $179 for both days. For details, call Ball State's Center for Energy Research/Education/Service at (765) 285-1135.
